The Cascade Range runs from British Columbia down through Washington and Oregon, and it's stacked with the kind of peaks that dominate a skyline from a hundred miles away — Rainier looming over Seattle like it's daring the city to forget it's dormant, not extinct. St. Helens still missing the eight hundred feet it lost in 1980. Hood standing over Portland the same way. This is a landscape that's still actively being built, one eruption at a time, and the people who climb it know it.
