Some trips need a passport. This one needed a full tank and a Land Rover that didn't mind dirt.

Andrew flew in from Australia and we pointed my 4x4 south out of Portland — Crater Lake first, that impossible blue water sitting in the collapsed remains of a volcano that blew itself apart seven thousand years ago. Then down into Yosemite, days on the trails under granite walls too big to photograph properly. Carmel for a stretch of coastal 4x4 offroading at the Land Rover experience center that had nothing to do with any park and everything to do with why you bring a Land Rover in the first place. Then Zion, red rock closing in tight overhead, and finally Death Valley — the lowest, hottest, driest place on the continent, because apparently we weren't done testing what the truck and the two of us could handle.

No flights. No support crew. Just a truck, a route, and the two of us deciding each morning whether to add another day.
